Can I Do This With an ITIN?
The most common questions — answered.
An ITIN opens more doors than most people realize. Banking, credit, investing, driving, college, and self-employment are all possible.
Banking & Credit- Open a bank account at Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, or Wells Fargo
- Get a credit card from Chase, Amex, or Capital One
- Build U.S. credit history using the same FICO system
- Check your credit score for free
- Invest in the stock market through Fidelity, Schwab, or Vanguard
- Open a Roth IRA — up to $7,000/year, grows tax-free
- File U.S. tax returns and keep your ITIN active
- Claim the Child Tax Credit if your kids have an SSN
- Get a driver's license in 19 states and D.C.
- Go to college and access state financial aid (AB 540)
- Freelance, self-employ, and invoice clients legally
- Rent an apartment without an SSN
An ITIN is a tax number only — it doesn't grant work authorization or immigration status. These things need a different path.
Work & Immigration- Work a W-2 job — requires EAD, visa, or SSN. DACA recipients can work legally.
- Get a Social Security Number — requires qualifying immigration status
- Get a U.S. passport — requires citizenship, not just an ITIN
- Apply for federal student loans (FAFSA) — requires SSN. State aid may be available.
- Use Robinhood or most fintech apps — use Fidelity or Schwab instead
- Claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) — requires an SSN
Frequently Asked Questions
What can you do with an ITIN?
With an ITIN you can open a bank account at Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, and Wells Fargo; apply for credit cards from Chase, American Express, and Capital One; build a credit history; invest through Fidelity, Schwab, and Vanguard; open a Roth IRA; get a driver's license in 19 states and D.C.; go to college and access state financial aid; and freelance or self-employ legally.
Can undocumented immigrants open a bank account?
Yes. Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, and Wells Fargo all accept an ITIN in place of a Social Security Number. You must apply in person at a branch. Bring your ITIN, a valid passport or government ID, and proof of U.S. address such as a utility bill or lease.
Can you build credit without a Social Security Number?
Yes. An ITIN works in place of an SSN for credit card applications and building a credit history. The same FICO scoring system applies to ITIN holders. Start with a secured credit card, pay on time every month, and you can build a strong credit score using only an ITIN over time.
Can undocumented immigrants invest in the stock market?
Yes. ITIN holders can invest through Fidelity, Charles Schwab, and Vanguard. Investing is a passive activity and does not require work authorization. You will report dividends and capital gains using your ITIN when you file taxes.
Is it free to get an ITIN?
Yes. The IRS does not charge a fee to apply for an ITIN. You file Form W-7 with your tax return and identity documents. If you use a Certifying Acceptance Agent the agent may charge a fee, but the ITIN itself is free from the IRS.
You are not alone in this.
Thousands of immigrants from every country are navigating the same path — ITIN, credit, banking, DACA, college, and building a future here.
