Identification — What to Bring

The Guatemalan DPI (Documento Personal de Identificación) may be accepted as a secondary ID at some branches. A Guatemalan passport is the most widely accepted form of ID for ITIN account openings. Call ahead to confirm what your branch accepts.

Standard documents required at any U.S. bank for an ITIN account opening:

Banking With an ITIN

These four major banks accept ITIN for personal checking and savings accounts. You must apply in person — online applications are designed for SSN holders.

Building Credit

A bank account does not build your credit score on its own. After opening your account, the next step is a credit card that reports to the three major bureaus.

Pay the full balance every month. After 12–18 months of on-time payments, your credit score will qualify you for unsecured cards like Chase Freedom Unlimited or Amex Blue Cash Everyday.

Driver's License

Large Guatemalan communities are in California, Florida, Texas, New York, and New Jersey. California, Florida (DACA-only), New York, and New Jersey issue driver's licenses to ITIN holders — see the state-by-state guide.

Taxes

Guatemalan immigrants earning income in the U.S. must file a U.S. tax return using their ITIN. Guatemala does not have a comprehensive income tax treaty with the United States.
